The Coronation of Mary in Heaven
Catholic presentation
The fifth glorious mystery
Mary praised the Lord and said:
Luke 1:48 ..for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
But why? Or rather why to this extent: to be taken up body and soul to God and crowned the queen of heaven? Jesus had made it clear that anyone can aspire to be the 'nearest and dearest' of His own heart. And what with Him not being particularly materialistic, the blood tie with His holy mother, which might matter to us on earth, would surely carry less weight in heaven? So why all this ceremony with crowns and the like?
I think the answer lies in one line I wrote on the crucifixion page:
"If such a mother was good for God to have, then clearly she could be good for us too. God does what is good."
I turst you read it previously or this won't make much sense now: So just as Eve was a mother to all people, so Mary is to be our mother in faith. She is assumed bodily into heaven as a foretaste and promise of our resurrection in Christ. But once there she does as she did in Cana, and intercedes for us.
In Cana, Jesus was surprised by Mary's call, but Mary was doing the will of the Father so Jesus complied. That strange event took place not to confuse Jesus, but to mark the fact that God who is love has a nature to share that love. And being God He shares His power of grace too and involves us all in the work of salvation. We can intercede for one another, sacrifice for one another, and work all manner of wonders in His Holy Name. But the closer we are to Him, the better we'll do any of these things.
The Angels who look upon His face shine radiently with the reflection of His glory. They bring His messages to us. Although they can listen to us too, they are primarily His messangers, not ours. Their role is to assist us within the range that has been assigned to them. But by placing His Holy Mother in the direct presence of our Lord, and making her a mother to us all in the Church and in our faith, Jesus has fixed it for us, to have a tender and caring advocate who relays and petitions our needs to the Lord, much more effectively than we can ourselves, because..
1 Peter 5:5 .. God favours the humble
Luke 1:48 ..Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed..
So let's pray to our humble mother Mary, in confidence that one prayer to her is magnified by the sinless perfection of her elevated love, and amplified by the proximity of her humility to God's own heart.
