"Freely you have received, so freely give"

Matthew 10:8

Introduction

Welcome to my personal / Christian website.  That's me in the picture, in case you were curious!

But the site isn't about me, rather it grew out of a wish to share certain things about faith and faith-living, with people who might find them good and useful.  Maybe that'll be you?

While I aim to cover mainly Christian topics, there might be some IT related content too, when I get round to it: perhaps something on family computing, parish computing, avoiding pitfalls, etc.

The rest of this page provides a bit of background on what I wish to convey here, why, and what authority I have to do this.  You'll probably piece together some personal details from other pages, so I'll stick here to faith-things.  If mention of that makes you want to 'run for the hills', then here are some good hills.

Still here? smiley

Great, but first some scene setting:  It's suggested by some people, that perhaps there's one true and almighty God.  Sound familiar?  Well I wonder if it will surprise you, if I say that we Christians don't suppose this to be so at all!

We don't suppose it, because for us it's not a theory and we certainly didn't make it up.  Rather it is God who has revealed this truth about Himself to us.  Our part, is simply to trust (believe) in Him, and what He has revealed.

This revelation has two separate but connected aspects I'd like to explore:

It has been my personal experience that this almighty God, is a kindly, forgiving and gentle God.  Albeit He is very determined that we make a success of our lives.  That is a success by His Fatherly terms, not ours.  And like any loving father, He's quite ready to be firm with us if we need.

As I look back I find He has always been one step ahead of me, at times holding back when my attitude or actions weren't right, at others providing for my needs even before I asked.  Not only is God a part of my life, His Church, the community He established is too, and has been, on and off for many years.  Oh I know the Church isn't perfect, but still I consider I've been quite privileged in this regard.  For an average person, I've had more than the average contact with people who cared to make a positive difference through the Church.  People who wanted to pass on the wonderful things that our loving Father in Heaven has in mind for us.

Life sometimes throws up challenges, and after failing and falling away from faith, the loving Holy Spirit came and found me again.  I believe that the quiet prayers and humble actions of other people in the background of my life helped it to eventually happen.  I returned with a new kind of conviction, based on what I can only explain as God's warm embrace.  As I said, it was the Holy Spirit that came and found me.  The support I'd previously found in people in the Church was now much harder to come by.  People I'd known had moved on, or even passed away and I was living elsewhere.  All of which made me rely much more directly on God Himself.

The result is I now value God's gifts, wisdom and His Church all the more for this experience.  And on reflection it seems a shame that others don't always get as good a grounding as I had in the 'things of God'.  That grounding helped me along my return path.  So I'd say I'm more than privileged, I'd go so far as to say I've been blessed.  This site is an attempt to pass on some of that blessing, to you.  It can't be an alternative to joining a parish and getting plugged in, but I hope and pray it might help someone, maybe you.

I should perhaps add that I've no particular paper qualification to speak on any of this.  The only authority I have is that of my own experience.  I don't speak for the Church in an official way, rather I speak to you personally, of my own experience in the Church.  I'll be straight with you about that and what I write in these pages.  And I don't claim that my experience is better or deeper than anyone else's; just that I have something to share, some of which would have been useful to me if someone had come and shared it with me.  Other parts, someone did come and share with me, and the joy of knowing these things of God is such that I have trouble keeping them to myself.

Sound unlikely?  Well think about it, what can be more motivating than starting to discover the Almighty maker of Heaven and Earth, the maker of you and me, of all that there is, of all that one can know, and of the capacity for all that one can feel?  He is the designer of our very purpose and the holder of the secrets to our fulfilment.  Add to that the fact that this Almighty God cares to an extreme extent, not only about me, but also for you, to the point of laying down His life.  How could you not want to share such news with others?

As I said above, this site is offered in the hope that it might be helpful to you, or someone you know.  In all cases, if anything here is true, then the truth could not have come from my own invention.  The real truth about existence is objective, it comes from the Creator and is often spoken of by His Church.  If anything is effective in the ultimate long-term, then it is by grace from above, and from the co-operation of your own heart.

In fact I'd encourage you to check out any references that I give.  Confirm for yourself what I say from more authoritative sources, such as the Bible and the Bible-consistent teachings of the Catholic Church.  These are sources I trust and hope you will find, in time, that you can rely on too.

Having said all that, I think it may be as well to state that I'm not really trying to convince you to believe what I say.  Certainly I'd like you to, very much, and pray that you will, but I'm not under any illusions that you'll believe it because I say it.  Really that is not what this site is about.  The content might at times put forward reasoned arguments and I might say I believe this or that.  But I expect you to be able to evaluate things for yourself and to be honest with your own conscience.  To be a believer you need two things, and you're not likely to get enough of them here:

So, if this site is not trying to convert you by persuasion, then what is it for?

Primarily, this site is intended for people who are already on some part of the same road as me, so to speak.  Whether further ahead, some way behind, or temporarily dropped-out, all of us Christians know we're not perfect and can benefit from each other's encouragement, faith sharing and prayer - that's what this site is about.

If you do not consider yourself a Christian, you are still welcome to look around, indeed, you are very welcome to come on the full-blown Christian journey of course.  I trust that what I've said so far reassures you of that, but doing so is entirely up to you yourself, take it or leave it.  My God respects your choice on this point, so this site does too.

One last word before you look further into these pages.  Know that I have stood before Jesus Himself, and prayed for you: that in looking at and reading these pages you might come closer to Him.  As close as you and He want.  Yet even God waits for your say so!

Revelation 3:20 "Behold, I stand at the gate, and knock. If any man shall hear my voice, and open the door to me, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."

Luke 11:9-10 "And I say to you, Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you.  For every one that asks, receives; and he that seeks, finds; and to him that knocks, it shall be opened."
