carving set in wall, showing Jesus being taken down from the cross

13 - Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross

Like our sins, the selfish deeds of that day were done.  When He walked and talked, Jesus had equated sin to death.  And here we see His lifeless body: no breath, no beating heart, no functioning brain.  His lifeless body lies separated from His human soul and Divine Spirit.  Those journey on, to the place where all the dead had gone.  There Jesus preaches the Gospel to those who were to be saved.  The Devil can't stop Him, having already thrown all he had against Him.

As His holy body is taken down from the cross, the power of His sacrifice starts to sweep across humanity, at the very time when Jesus has no visible power at all.  This is a mystery worth remembering when we look upon the Eucharistic Host.  What power lies in that seeming bread and wine!

Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened: and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose,

53 And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, came into the holy city, and appeared to many.
