3 - Jesus Falls the First Time
As Jesus falls under the weight of the cross, how do the two characters shown discussing 'affairs of state' at the top of this scene behave? As Jesus knocks on the door of our hearts, how do we respond?
Profit takes many forms, it can be financial, personal, or even national and political. And if some honest person doing what is right gets in the way? Naturally profit will look more attractive than loss. So the 'right man', is an inconvenience in a get-ahead kind of world. And if He should also happen to be the truth itself, then that is received as an inconvenient truth. Best overlooked as quickly as possible!
Jesus' suffering was for all time, for every sin in every situation. We can respond by focusing in on our need to get on in this world, in our communities, or as nations. Or we can respond by recognising when we've fallen down on the truth that is written into our hearts.
Let's pray for the grace to know when we're down in Jesus' eyes. And the grace to ask Him to help us get up again and change our ways. And let's do it out of love for the one who gave up His pragmatic comforts and freedoms, preferring suffering for our sakes.
